Last month, I turned 30. My goal for this new decade is to be more fully and fearlessly myself more of the time. In the first single from her upcoming album (see below), Florence Welch sings:
here I don’t have to be quiet
here I don’t have to be kind
extraordinary and normal all at the same time
I want to spend more time “here” during my thirties. I want to come home to myself. I want to live here.
Below is the next poem in my Mead of Poetry series. Tell me if you feel something ⚘
If I wasn’t afraid
if I wasn't afraid I would create without bounds Birthday Suit Central myself in my rawest form no fear, no shame, full honesty I would announce what I want I would make more messes my mistakes would be loud I would fail on full view if I wasn't afraid my little monsters would sleep no more messages of doubt finally they would rest tucked up in their teeny monster beds would they dream, if I wasn't afraid? bare feet and naps in dirt public crying promising friends just how much they matter my world, the world, would glow like worms or sticks or embers a warm and pulsing light every breath would electrify my wonder shared with the world connective outlooks Like desire. Like god. Like release. my hunger would become me, but only if I wasn't afraid endless portals through limitless lessons The Fool jumping off the cliff falling or floating, no matter to me: she who is not afraid.
Tunes for Fools
If you too are contemplating the prompt if I wasn’t afraid, please dive into “Everybody Scream” by Florence + The Machine. Since its August release, this song has been on repeat for me in a meaningful way. It has been my theme song. My rallying cry. My anthem of hope. My expression of rage.
I could quote the entire song’s lyrics to you, attempting to underscore their significance. Each line building upon the next. I’ll keep my most favorite lyrics to myself so that you may find your own.
When this song plays, I feel free. I feel full.
I hope you do too.
Thank you for reading Cool Fool. I’m honored that you put my words in your brain.
